Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to make an appointment or can I just walk in?

We prefer clients make appointments for their pets.

What vaccinations are required for my dog?
-Distemper/Parvovirus/Adenovirus type 2/Parainfluenza combination is considered a core vaccine required for healthy puppies and adult dogs. Our vaccine includes leptospirosis in the last two puppy vaccines and the annual adult vaccinations. Leptospirosis is a bacteria that is commonly found in Oregon and is transmitted via water sources. It can cause liver and kidney disease and can be transmitted to people.

-Rabies is required by law for all dogs six months of age and older in Klamath County.
An annual examination performed by our doctors is included with every vaccination.

-Many groomers require a Bordatella vaccination.

What vaccinations are required for my cat?
-Feline rhinotrachitis/calicivirus/panleukopenia combination is considered a core vaccine required for healthy kittens and cats.

-Our doctors highly recommend that all cats are vaccinated for rabies. In Oregon, bats are a common carrier of rabies. Bats are known to come into houses where indoor cats can become exposed to rabies.

When can I take my puppy outside or to public places?
-Puppies are not fully protected from common viruses until they receive their last booster vaccine at 16 weeks of age. The safest option is to keep your puppy at your house and known disease free locations, such as a relative’s house. During this time, it is important to expose your puppy to as many social situations as possible, including those with other dogs and all ages of people. Use your new puppy as an opportunity to have your friends visit you!

What is a normal temperature for my dog or cat?
-A normal temperature for a dog or cat is 99-100 F. This can be somewhat variable for dogs or cats that come to the veterinary office.

How old should my dog be when I spay or neuter him or her?
-Our office recommends spaying a female dog before her first heat cycle at 6 months of age.

-For neutering male dogs, we recommend neutering at 1 year of age. Please call our office if you have further questions about this recommendation difference.

How old should my cat be when I spay or neuter him or her?
-Our office recommends spaying and neutering cats prior to sexual maturity, which is typically around 6 months of age.

How much should I feed my pet?
The amount of food depends on the calorie content of a food as well as the activity level of a pet. One of our primary recommendations is to feed a food appropriate to the life stage of a dog or cat. An overweight adult dog should not be eating a puppy food or one “for all life stages.” In order for a food to be “all life stages,” it is a puppy food. Please contact our office by phone, email or facebook with further questions.

What food should I feed my pet?
The type of pet food you choose is a personal choice. Keep in mind that a lot of what you see in advertising is just that, advertising. Again, please contact our office by phone, email or facebook with further questions and discussion about the best food for your pet.

Should I brush my dog’s teeth?
YES! The structure of a dog’s teeth is exactly the same as our teeth. Regular teeth brushing will cut down on dental tartar and plaque. This will keep teeth healthy and minimize disease. Ideally, we should brush our dog’s teeth every day, however, if you can manage two to three times a week, this is fantastic!

How much does it cost to spay a dog/cat?
-This depends on the size of the dog. Please call our office for more specific details.
